The programme

A programme, not a timetable of lessons.

Most tutoring is sold by the hour, with no end point and no measure of progress. Each Stretton Mathematics programme has a clear beginning, a fixed structure and a measured result.

  1. BEFORE JOINING

    Diagnostic assessment

A complimentary assessment shows exactly where your child stands, topic by topic. We then talk you through the results on a short call or by email.

  2. BEFORE WEEK 1

    Placement

Your child joins a small group of no more than eight students working at the same standard.

  3. WEEKS 1–12

    Two live lessons a week

Twenty-four live online lessons, taught to the gaps the diagnostic revealed. Homework support throughout, and catch-up for any missed lesson.

  4. WEEK 12

    Progress assessment

A short final assessment measures the improvement, and you receive a written summary of the results.

Inside every lesson

One hour. The same clear routine, every time.

Two evening lessons a week · UK time

Each lesson follows the same structure, so students know what to expect and every minute counts. They leave each lesson having practised on their own and knowing exactly what to improve.

  1. 1

    Clear explanation

The new idea taught step by step, building on what the group already knows.

  2. 2

    Worked examples

Exam-style questions solved in full, so students see exactly what a complete answer looks like.

  3. 3

    Immediate feedback

Students try questions in the lesson and get feedback straight away, so mistakes are fixed before they stick.

  4. 4

    Independent practice

Students finish by working on their own. Answers are marked, with feedback on how to improve.

How online lessons work

Live on Zoom, from home.

Every lesson is taught live in a small group, with the teacher and students working together in real time.

Take the free diagnostic

Placed by ability

Taught alongside students at the same standard.

Groups are formed from the diagnostic assessment, so every lesson is pitched precisely. No one is waiting for others to catch up, and no one is left behind. Working through demanding problems with capable peers builds a focus and momentum that one-to-one lessons often lack.

  • No more than eight students in a group
  • Matched by age and by diagnostic result
  • The same group for all twelve weeks

Your teacher

Taught by Mr Johnston, a qualified mathematics teacher.

Every lesson is planned and taught by a qualified mathematics teacher with a PGCE, not a student tutor or a marketplace stranger. The same teacher takes your child’s group for all twelve weeks, and knows exactly where each student started and what they need next.

  • Qualified teacherA fully qualified mathematics teacher, trained to teach maths to whole classes and small groups.
  • PGCE in EducationA postgraduate teaching qualification, with classroom training in how students learn mathematics.
  • Degree and master’sA degree in Accounting and Economics, and a master’s in International Business and Finance.
  • DBS checkedA current DBS check, so you can be confident about who is teaching your child.
  • Every abilityExperience teaching students at every level, from those rebuilding confidence to those aiming for the top grades.
  • SEND experienceExperience teaching students with special educational needs, adapting explanations and pace so every student can access the lesson.

After studying accounting, economics and international finance, teaching turned out to be the real passion. Lessons bring a real-world view of how numbers are used, and a determination to help every student see how far they can go.

The progress guarantee

If the progress assessment shows no improvement, the next programme is free.

Your child sits a diagnostic assessment before joining and a progress assessment in week 12. If the week 12 score is not higher than the diagnostic, they may join the next twelve-week programme at no charge.

Full terms are in our terms and conditions.

How are the groups formed?

Every student sits a diagnostic assessment before joining the programme. We place them with students of a similar age who are working at the same standard, in a group of no more than eight.

Who teaches the lessons?

A qualified, DBS-checked mathematics teacher with a PGCE in Education, a degree in Accounting and Economics and a master’s in International Business and Finance. Experienced in teaching students of every ability, including students with special educational needs (SEND).

Are the lessons live?

Yes. All twenty-four lessons are one hour long and taught live online by a qualified maths teacher, twice a week in the evening, with the same small group for the full programme. Each group’s days and time are confirmed when you enrol. The first group meets on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 pm UK time.

What does the diagnostic assessment involve?

A short, complimentary assessment covering the key topics for your child's stage. It shows where marks are being lost and decides which group your child joins. We then talk you through the results on a short call or by email, with no obligation to enrol.

Can I pay in instalments?

Yes. The fee is £480 in full, or three monthly payments of £160.

What is the progress guarantee?

If your child's week 12 progress assessment score is not higher than their diagnostic score, they may join the next twelve-week programme at no charge. Full terms are in our terms and conditions.

How will I know it has worked?

In week 12 your child sits a short progress assessment. You receive a written summary comparing it with the diagnostic assessment, topic by topic.

Is homework support included?

Yes. Homework support is provided throughout the twelve weeks, so your child is never stuck between lessons.

What if my child misses a lesson?

Catch-up is available for any missed lesson, so your child stays in step with their group.

Is there a break over Christmas?

Yes, one week. There are no lessons from Monday 21 December, and lessons start again on Monday 28 December. Any group running over Christmas finishes a week later, so no lessons are lost. Homework help is still available during the break week.

When can my child start?

New groups open every fortnight, as places allow, so there is rarely long to wait. Your child sits the diagnostic assessment first, then joins the next group at their level.

Which exam boards do you cover?

All of them. Lessons cover the GCSE maths content for AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas. Groups are matched by level, and any board-specific differences are covered in lessons and homework help.

Which ages do you teach?

Primary (KS2), lower secondary (KS3), GCSE including post-16 resits, and adult learners, including Functional Skills.
